WSL roundup: Chelsea get back into the groove at Spurs as Madonna watches on

Chelsea defeated Tottenham 2-0 to boost their faint hopes of retaining the Women’s Super League title, as Madonna watched from the stands at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Goals from Keira Walsh and Alyssa Thompson either side of half-time ended Chelsea’s run of back-to-back defeats and left Sonia Bompastor’s team nine points off the leaders Manchester City, who lost 1-0 against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium earlier on Sunday.

Madonna had watched her daughters, Estere and Stella, play for Tottenham in an under-14 academy game on Saturday. The 67-year-old pop singer then turned up to watch the senior women’s team on Sunday, who stay fifth in the table after failing to capitalise on early momentum.

Olivia Holdt hit the crossbar for the hosts before Chelsea took the lead when Erin Cuthbert’s corner was half-cleared. Walsh picked up the ball just inside the area and the England midfielder found the bottom corner. Thompson followed up to score the visitors’ second goal after Sjoeke Nüsken’s shot was saved by Lize Kop.

Liverpool moved off the bottom of the table with a convincing 4-1 home win against Aston Villa, who fell to their third successive WSL defeat.

Mia Enderby opened the scoring from Ceri Holland’s low cross, and Martha Thomas poked home a looping ball to make it 2-0 inside the first 15 minutes. Miri Taylor pulled one back for the visitors, before Jennifer Falk denied Kirsty Hanson as Villa pushed for an equaliser.

Grace Fisk restored Liverpool’s two-goal cushion with just seven minutes remaining, volleying past the Villa substitute keeper Ellie Roebuck. Aurelie Csillag then scored on the break deep in stoppage time as Gareth Taylor’s side sealed their second league win of the season in style.

West Ham fought back from 2-0 down to beat Brighton 3-2, with three goals in eight minutes from Ffion Morgan, Shekiera Martínez and Viviane Asseyi. The visitors looked on course for a routine win after Kiko Seike and Manuela Vanegas found the net, but West Ham found a lifeline when Morgan’s cross looped into the net.

Martínez levelled four minutes later as the Brighton keeper Chiamaka Nnadozie’s clearance ricocheted in off the Germany forward, and the West Ham captain Asseyi bundled home the winner in stoppage time. Victory helped the Hammers to climb above the new bottom side Leicester, who lost 2-0 against Manchester United on Saturday.

Inma Gabarro’s second-half goal secured a 1-0 win for Everton at London City Lionesses, but it was the goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan who claimed the award for player of the match after making several saves. “It wasn’t pretty but we are so happy to get the three points and a clean sheet,” she said afterwards.
